PREGÚNTALE A FRANCESC

¡Feliz semana!

The best place in the world is right here
Almost twenty years ago, my dear friend Care Santos and I had a weekly ritual. To kill time on days when her husband got off work late, we’d go to dinner at a Japanese restaurant on Verdi Street.
One of those nights, while observing a mysterious shop right across the street, we came up with the idea that would give birth to The Best Place in the World Is Right Here, the pioneering “healing novel” that went through many reprints and dozens of translations. Unfortunately, it has not been translated into English yet, but in France, it was among the best-selling paperbacks for over a year.

The story, in short, is this: at 36, Iris has lost her will to live when, one gray afternoon, she finds a café in her neighborhood that she’d never noticed before: The Best Place in the World Is Right Here.
There, an enigmatic waiter will invite her each afternoon to sit at one of the six tables in the small café, each possessing a distinct magical property that will help her understand what she needs to revitalize her life.
Among the countless readers who have written us about this fable, many said they would love to find this café and try out its tables. Well, if you’re near Barcelona on November 1st and you understand Spanish, you can experience it live with Care and me. That afternoon, The Ikigai Show will take place at the Metamorfosis Theater, and we’ll visit the magical tables and many other things will happen. Below this message, you’ll find the link to the tickets.
By the way… this Monday we’re launching the existential advice column I announced last week. Let’s get to the chosen question:
ASK FRANCESC
—Why am I always doing things for others, and no one even asks me how I am? (T)
Dear T, human beings have different abilities, and you have the power to care for many people. But you can’t demand that others have the same gift as you. Don’t think they’re ungrateful: everyone gives what they can give, according to their talents and their stage of personal development.
I, for example, have a talent for organizing parties. Some people who have been to my house a hundred times have never invited me to theirs, and I’m truly grateful for that, because they wouldn’t know how to do it well. They don’t have that knack, but I’m sure they have others.
During a period in my life when I was broke, there were people who had never invited me to anything or even asked how I was who, upon learning of it, appeared like mushrooms into de fog. A guy I hadn’t seen in two years called me and said, “Francesc, I have xxx euros in my savings account. If you need them, I’ll come by your house this afternoon and give them to you in an envelope.”
I think you’ll be much happier if you stop judging others and give up asking for anything in return for what you do, because that’s a highway to unhappiness. Give for the joy of giving, and that’s it. The Universe will repay you in another way. In fact, the person who gives, feels powerful; he/she is the hero of the story, while the one who receives is the supporting actor.
Before I finish, I must confess that I hate being asked, «How are you?» Unless I’m with a therapist or with a financial advisor, that question leads nowhere. If I’m a whiner and complain about my misfortunes, I’m going to bore the other person (nobody likes to hear about problems), who, on the other hand, can’t help me anyway. If I tell him about my successes, he/she might feel inferior by comparison and I could end up lowering his/her self esteem
That’s why, when I get that question, I immediately brush it off with a curt «Good, good» and quickly steer the conversation towards topics that interest me more: «Did you see that Amyl & the Sniffers are playing in Barcelona? We could go, man.»
Regarding the importance of not bothering others, I wrote this (text in Spanish):

And to avoid being offended, here’s another one (text in Spanish):

Warm regards
Have a great week!
Francesc
